Using Quantitative and Qualitative Research to Enhance Patient Focused Drug Development

Using Quantitative and Qualitative Research to Enhance Patient Focused Drug Development By Hannah Eccard FDA’s focus of incorporating the patient voice into the drug development process requires the life science industry to engage in new research strategies. Based on what we're seeing so far from the FDA, it appears that the agency is closely considering the value of mixed methods: qualitative research along with quantitative research. Dr. Theresa Mullin, Associate Director for Strategic Initiatives at the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) at FDA, said at the first guidance meeting for Patient Focused Drug Development (PFDD) [...]

What is a Virtual Advisory Board product?

What is a Virtual Advisory Board product? By Monica St. Claire Almost 60 percent of all clinical trial protocols have at least one amendment. Amendments lower the numbers of recruited patients as well as increase the cost of clinical trials according to Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development Impact Study from 2016.1  Obtaining input from patients and caregivers early in the protocol development process could prevent many amendments. This is just one reason to consider an Inspire virtual advisory board. Virtual advisory boards provide clients with a long-term opportunity to engage with key patients [...]

Engaging with communities on Inspire: Inspire’s Ostomy Support Community

Engaging with communities on Inspire: Inspire’s Ostomy Support Community Engaging with communities on Inspire:  Inspire’s Ostomy Support Community Ostomy surgery is a procedure performed on people who have a diseased or malfunctioning colon, small intestines or bladder. After the procedure, bodily wastes - either urine, feces or indigestible food - leave the body through a created opening in the abdomen, called a stoma. Waste is collected in medical appliances. Launching communities with Inspire: The Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor (PNET) Support Community

Launching communities with Inspire: The Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor (PNET) Support Community For patients and caregivers facing rare cancers, finding others going through the same experience is challenging.  Yet, communicating with others who have “been there” is essential support. In 2011 Inspire’s moderation team found over 2900 mentions of carcinoid and over 200 mentions of neuroendocrine tumor in posts across all the cancer communities of Inspire.  Patients, caregivers, and others affected by pancreatic [...]

Inspire posts forward medical research in adverse drug reactions, new study shows

Inspire posts forward medical research in adverse drug reactions, new study shows Over 2 million injuries, hospitalizations and deaths in the US each year are associated with post-approval adverse drug reactions (ADRs).1 The usual method of gathering ADR data is through provider reporting.  Research suggests that health care providers tend to under-report ADRs, sometimes because patients just don’t discuss all of their treatment experiences with them.2 Supplementing spontaneous provider-reliant reporting could be extremely beneficial to patient safety. In Can Patient-Generated Health Communication on the Internet Enhance Pharmacovigilance? (Part 1)3 and Research Confirms: Valuable Patient-Centered Data on Inspire [...]

From Research To Action for Patients

From Research To Action for Patients It is exciting to see the results of research providing strong, positive benefits to patients. That was the take-away from a joint presentation made by Inspire and Strongbridge BioPharma at the Pharmaceutical Market Research Conference (PMRC) this month. Last fall, Strongbridge BioPharma engaged Inspire to find the “rarest of the rare”- people who have the exceptionally rare condition, primary periodic paralysis or PPP. There are between 4,000 and 5,000 diagnosed individuals in the US. Finding the Rarest of the Rare for Market Research: Patient Journey Mapping Through In-depth Interviews describes how [...]
