Inspire Case Study: Leveraging Inspire to mobilize patients

The Challenge

As it was developing the osteoporosis treatment Denosumab, Amgen's Government Affairs department wanted to understand patient sentiment about access to Medicare early bone density screening (DXA) services. Amgen wanted to help mobilize patients to lobby federal lawmakers to ensure Medicare coverage of DXA.

The Solution

Amgen partnered with Inspire, which already managed the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) online support community, to create and deliver a survey to 2,000 members of the community.

The Results

300 patients and caregivers delivered completed responses, a 28% response rate. Importantly, 60% of those respondents said they would be willing to lobby their representatives regarding the importance of DXA access and reimbursement.

For Amgen, the project demonstrated the capability to rapidly leverage an engaged online community to glean time-sensitive patient insights in a cost-efficient manner and mobilize concerned patients around a single issue.

Deloitte cited the Amgen/NOF/Inspire project in a report on social networks in the life sciences industry, noting in its report, "Social networks can help companies mobilize patients by collaborating with medical foundations."

Brian Loew, CEO of Inspire, noted the project gave Amgen another added benefit: letting patient thought-leaders know that Amgen supports an issue important to those patients.
